Down The Hole Drill Rig

down the hole drill rig

A down-the-hole drill rig is a crawler-mounted drilling machine designed for blast hole drilling in surface mining and quarrying. The term “down the hole” refers to the hammer location: the percussion mechanism sits directly above the drill bit at the bottom of the hole. This positioning transfers impact energy directly to the bit with minimal loss.

Blast hole drilling demands reliable equipment. Mines need consistent production. Quarries require accurate hole placement. Construction projects depend on timely completion. Without a dependable drilling solution, blasting operations fall behind schedule and costs increase. A down-the-hole drill rig delivers the performance you need. This crawler-mounted machine combines mobility with powerful DTH drilling capability. It moves easily across rough terrain and drills accurately positioned blast holes.

The YG series rigs offer multiple models covering hole diameters from 83mm to 165mm. While we manufacture a full range of DTH drilling equipment, the models shown here represent our most popular configurations for mining, quarrying, and construction applications.

 5 Down-the-Hole Drill Rig Applications

  1. Mining Operations: Open-pit mines rely on blast-hole drilling for production. The machine handles the demanding conditions of mining sites. It drills blast holes accurately and consistently, supporting efficient blasting operations. The crawler undercarriage moves across rocky terrain without difficulty.
  2. Quarrying: Stone quarries need precise blast holes for controlled fragmentation. The machine drills straight, accurate holes that produce consistent rock fragmentation. This improves crusher feed quality and reduces secondary blasting.
  3. Construction Blasting: Road construction, dam building, and tunnel excavation often require rock blasting. A down-the-hole drill rig prepares blast holes quickly and efficiently. It moves easily between work areas and sets up fast for each blasting round.
  4. Water Conservancy Projects: Dam construction and hydroelectric projects require rock excavation. DTH drilling equipment provides the hole accuracy needed for controlled blasting in these sensitive environments.
  5. Defence and Civil Engineering: Military construction and large civil engineering projects use the rig for rock excavation and site preparation.

How Does a Down-the-Hole Drill Rig Operate?

The operation follows a straightforward process that experienced drillers perform daily.

  • Position the Rig: The operator drives the crawler DTH rig machine to the first drill position. The machine walks across the site at speeds up to 4km/h, maneuvering into position accurately.
  • Set the Drill Angle: The mast adjusts to the required drilling angle. The YG series drills vertical, inclined, and horizontal holes depending on the application. The maximum horizontal hole height ranges from 2.8m to 3.6m across the series.
  • Start the Compressor (Split-Type) or Engine (Integrated): Split-type rigs receive compressed air from a separate compressor unit. Integrated rigs use their own onboard compressor, powered by the diesel engine. The compressed air drives the DTH hammer.
  • Advance the Drill String: The rotary head rotates the drill pipe while feeding it downward. Compressed air flows through the drill pipe to the hammer, driving the piston that strikes the bit. The air also flushes cuttings up and out of the hole.
  • Drill to Depth: The driller continues advancing the string until reaching the required hole depth. The DTH rig drills to a maximum depth of 50 meters, depending on ground conditions and hole diameter.
  • Retract and Reposition: Once the hole reaches depth, the driller retracts the string and moves to the next hole position. The machine’s mobility allows rapid movement between holes in the blast pattern.

6 Frequently Asked Questions About Down-the-Hole Drill Rig

Q1: Can I get DTH drilling equipment with a cab?

A: Yes. Cab-equipped options are available for the YG series. The cab provides weather protection and reduces operator exposure to noise and dust. It adds to the machine cost, and current pricing is available on request.

Q2: Can you make an integrated down-the-hole drill rig?

A: Yes. We recommend integrated DTH rigs for many applications. This configuration carries the compressor onboard, eliminating the need for a separate support vehicle. It simplifies site logistics and reduces equipment coordination requirements.

Q3: Can the rig drill to 100 meters?

A: No. The maximum drilling depth for the YG series is 50 meters. This depth suits most surface mining, quarrying, and construction blasting applications. For deeper drilling, different equipment configurations may be needed.

Q4: Can a DTH drill rig drill horizontal holes?

A: Yes. The YG series drills both vertical and horizontal holes. This flexibility allows underwater blasting, tunnel work, and foundation applications. The mast adjusts to various angles to suit the job requirements.

Q5: What hole diameters can the YG series drill?

A: Hole diameters range from 83mm to 165mm depending on the model. The YGS153 drills 83- 130 mm holes. The YGS350 drills 90- 165 mm holes. Match the model to your blasting pattern requirements.

Q6: What is the horizontal hole height on the YG series?

A: Maximum horizontal hole height ranges from 2.8m on the YGS153 to 3.6m on the YGS180. This determines the highest horizontal hole the rig can drill from its standing position.
